Michigan Again and Again Shay Elementary Harbor Springs Video
HARBOR SPRINGS — To celebrate the end of the school yr, tertiary-class students in Harbor Springs recorded and released a cover of The Accidentals' hit song, "Michigan and Again." Since the video was posted on Facebook and YouTube last Friday, the video has been viewed more than than 26,000 times and the number is notwithstanding climbing.
Jason Byma, elementary music instructor, presented the video to schoolhouse lath members during their meeting on Monday and received high praise for the song.
"I was astonished at the quality of this," said Superintendent Mark Tompkins.
Nathan Fairbanks, master of Blackbird Elementary and Shay Elementary, said the video has taken off and was recently retweeted by The Accidentals as well.
"It was one of those things that's blown u.s.a. away," he said, adding the video showcases the district'southward music plan.
Byma said he was not expecting the video to proceeds so much attention. He did a music video with students terminal year, set to "Rockin' Robin," that garnered 4,000 views and he was hoping to match that number with "Michigan and Once again."
"My goal was to go over 4,000…but that was iv,000 over the form of a yr," Byma said. "Nosotros released 'Rockin' Robin' one yr ago this upcoming Wednesday, and so 'Rockin' Robin' hasn't even been out for a year and they're at 4,200 (views). 'Michigan and Over again' has been out for three days now and on YouTube posts alone, they're already one-half (the full views of' Rockin' Robin') so when you put Facebook…26,000."
Byma found out the video was raking in the views when a parent reached out to tell him the post was "going viral" on Facebook. Before the school lath meeting on Mon dark, Byma said the video had 26,000 views and nearly 600 shares.
"I'm very happy," he said. "The kids worked their tails off. They sound absolutely gorgeous. Information technology's my go-to track at present on my drive home."
When Byma was offset putting the arrangements together for the students, he ran into some problem finding a track of the music without vocals that he could utilize every bit an accompaniment. So he went straight to the source and asked The Accidentals for some help.
"A lot of times you tin can get a karaoke rails," Byma said. "I did a little bit of searching and couldn't find anything, so I messaged (The Accidentals) through Facebook saying 'This is what we're looking to practice.' Nosotros were kind of coming upwardly on a time crunch and I was thinking about pushing the project into the following year. Within xv minutes non but did they respond but they sent me their rail. Basically it'southward their original track minus their voices."
Byma received the rail on a Thursday around x p.m. and by 9 a.1000. the adjacent twenty-four hours students were singing forth to the accompaniment.
"We were rehearsing that for quite a bit of time," Byma said. "They sang forth to the accessory at their Michigan Rocks concert and we posted that on Youtube. Then it was suggested that we record them in a controlled setting, so we did that the final music classes (of the school yr)."
The three third class classes each had a day to record and soloists recorded during their dejeuner times. Byma said they recorded for about five hours total and editing took another 28 hours.
Byma said he is enjoying the video'southward success but it likewise makes him a piddling nervous because the bar has been set loftier for future videos.
"It makes it a niggling trickier for next year as well as for the other grades. We're currently working this week right now on 'Rockin' Robin,' the second graders recorded 'Rockin' Robin,'" Byma said. " Information technology makes me hopeful that the launch of this one helps promote the others and hopefully we can continue the quality up there. That'due south the very important part is the quality and not the quantity."
This is Byma'southward 3rd year with the district and he thanked board members and the administration for their back up on Mon.
"I enjoy this position very much," he said. "This is my third twelvemonth and I never expected that this is where, in three years, I would exist. It'southward all because of this lath of the commune and the administration."
